Family Learning

 Religious School families are engaged in education at Temple Sholom through a variety of pathways which allow families to choose from diverse activities that are of interest to them and that fit into their schedules. Throughout the year the school offers about 12 to 14 structured activities designed for families with children in grades 4, 5 and 6 and which are suitable in many instances for families with children who are younger. The programs encompass holiday celebrations, trips to Jewish museums in New York, art, cooking, celebrating Shabbat and learning about Jewish sports stars.

     In addition to these structured activities, families are offered the opportunity to pursue areas of Jewish learning and engagement on their own. For example, the school provides a reflection sheet for “G-dcast,” a web-based animated interpretation of the weekly Torah portion.  This gives families the opportunity to engage in a dialogue about the Bible. Alternatively, through the school’s involvement with Metro-West and their Bar/Bat Mitzvah Project Expo, there are ways for families to directly help those who are less fortunate.  Participation in this mitzvot (commandment), is a hands-on way for children to learn about Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), a core Jewish value.
