10:00 AM - 12:00 PMJewish Heritage Tour - Live on the streets of Lima, Peru
In the footsteps of "Conversos" and the secret Jews of the 16th and 17th centuries in Lima
Did you know that we had a secret Jewish community in Lima during the 16th and 17th centuries? And that many Limenians are of Jewish descent without knowing it?
Lima's Jewish Heritage virtual tour focuses on the history of the secret Jewish community of Lima back in the colonial period, a time when the inquisition was established in Peru and Mexico, visiting externally the most important and historic sites connected to this story in Downtown Lima, including the place where the first synagogue existed, the entrance of the Inquisition building in Lima, and the Main square where the “Autos de Fe” took place. We will also learn the biographies of some famous (and not so famous) Jews of Lima, and more, even learning about what the present day Jewish community looks like nowadays. This tour is the product of years of investigation that our guide Vanessa has done in the search for the Jewish history of Lima and her own heritage.
