Tikkun olam, or to repair the world, is an important pursuit at Temple Sholom. From our children in Religious School providing items for local food pantries, families collecting books and reading to children in resource-strapped schools, individuals joining the Social Action committee, contributing tzedakah and even saying the Shabbat prayers, our congregation is actively seeking to perform mitzvot.  The definition of mitzvah is broad and deep.

Pirkei Avot: “Do not separate yourself from the community.”

HumanNeedsFoodPantryTSWE members gather together at a local grocery store to shop for the Montclair Human Needs Food Pantry.  Shopping for people in need fills us with a sense of mitzvot and then delivered the items as a community.ThanksgivingHolidayFoodDriveBanner

The Salvation Army of Montclair welcomes our donations of warm clothing, outerwear, blankets and any related items for their clients, some of whom are living on the streets. Donation bins can be found in the upstairs lobby sometime in December when the weather turns cold and remain out until the end of January.

CycleforSurvivor

Our very own Emily GoldbergEmily&Lynne
helped build this national fundraising movement which raises money to fight rare cancers. 100% of every donation to Cycle for Survival is directly allocated to research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center within six months of the events.  RichardDenby
The donations go to pioneering research and clinical trials, and have already led to new and better treatments for cancer patients worldwide.

If you want to fight back against cancer, join The Temple Sholom Riders!

Housing local homeless families

TSWE partners with Notre Dame Church every May to offer two weeks of shelter, meals and warmth to parents and their children without homes. Volunteers are needed to prepare and deliver meals, to serve and assist the guests for day, evening and overnight shifts, and to facilitate activities with the children.

Contact Shari Ritter for more information.

The Social Action Committee, under the Rabbi’s suggestion and initiative, participated in a Chanukah fundraising project with other congregations on December 11, 2015. The goal was to support the Israel Defense Forces’ Border Patrol by creating a recreational space for the soldiers to use while off duty at the frontiers. Over $2,000 was raised.
