Mission Statement

TEMPLE SHOLOM OF WEST ESSEX

MORE THAN A CONGREGATION, WE'RE A FAMILY

We are a vital, inclusive reform congregation that embraces individuals and families in a warm, nurturing environment.

We foster Jewish commitment with innovative approaches to worship, learning and living in the context of Jewish values and tradition.

We define our congregational life through our relationship with God, Torah, Israel and the global Jewish community.

Thirty-five Jewish families in Cedar Grove formed the congregation in 1954. The congregation was without a home until May 1956 when the land on which the Temple now stands was purchased. Today, Temple Sholom has approximately 400 members (individuals and families) living in many West Essex communities. The congregation is affiliated with the Union For Reform Congregation, the oldest federated union of synagogues in North America.

Nestled in the foothills fo the Second Mountain of the Watchung Mountain Range, our congregation welcomes those interested in learning about Judaism for the first time as well as those who have participated in Judaism for many years. We are sensitive to the needs of interfaith families, single parents and the unaffiliated.

Temple Sholom — More than a congregation, we’re family!
